Excerpts:
This book describes a journey – a journey from co-dependency towards love and meditation. It is a journey out of the grip of fear. It is based both on my own inner process and on material that I work with in seminars that I lead.
Fear is a core issue, perhaps the core issue that we all have to deal with in our lives. When it is denied and unacknowledged, it gets shoved to the basement of our mind from where it exerts a powerful and often crippling affect on our life. But if we can make friends with our fear, bringing it out into the open and explore it with intensity and compassion, it can become transformational – opening us to a depth of vulnerability and self-acceptance….
I had compensated for my shame quite well on the outside, but inside, I always felt like a failure. I felt that there was something inherently wrong with me. That is shame.
When we are in shock, we can’t think, we can’t feel, we can’t move, and we can’t talk. There is nothing to do but be with it. I now recognize that many situations that brought me so much pain in the past were situations where I was in shock but didn’t know it.
Our conscious mind does not want to enter into the emptiness that abandonment provokes. Our attitude is that we should be happy. But with that attitude, there is no space to go through the fear and feel our pain when it comes.
We have to envision our life and each aspect of it, even the most trivial situations, as an opportunity to play our fear edge. Every situation we face and create in life gives us the opportunity to play our fear edge.
